Reflection of my choreographic process so far

As I am now over halfway through choreographing movement for my final piece, I wanted to reflect on my process so far to ensure that I am meeting the learning outcomes but also plan the remainder of my choreography. I have a clear storyline and intent behind my movement and know where I would like the piece to lead next. I intend to keep the piece building in intensity within sound and movement quality leading to an uncontrolled climax. However, I do not want the ending to be obvious and expected for example letting all my movements to become loose, expansive, and wild. I want to include these feelings in a more grounded and contained way like a tornado, a violently rotating column of energy. At this stage I have begun editing my music together creating a slow build in energy and tempo, the addition of the Natural Selection section between the silence and New Order has helped to bridge the gap between these two contrasting music styles. The clarity in music has helped me to envisage a storyline utilising the butterfly effect, following the path of the butterfly. This has helped to give an intention behind each movement and link each section together. When performing I am confident in my choreography and movement and feel as though it is becoming ingrained in my muscle memory. Having had the opportunity for sharing and feedback from my peers as well as self-evaluation I am open to making changes and improvements. I would like to begin to show this confidence outwardly to the audience. Overall, in my choreographic process I am happy with how the piece is developing and flowing. I am in a good position to reflect and refine what I have done so far to then inform how I progress next.

At this stage I also wanted to make sure that I was meeting the assessment learning outcomes. I believe I have met LO1 by implementing my knowledge of my chosen practitioner Wayne McGregor including his response to music and the intensity of his movement style into my choreography. I want to continue to refer to Wayne McGregor and his choreographic process of exploring ideas through dance and the choreographic devices used to create original movement. In my choreography I would like to continue to push my body as I explain in my Wayne McGregor Chroma blog. I believe this will come with refining my choreographic solo as I reflect on where I can enhance my lines, dynamics, and intention of each movement.

I also believe I have met LO2 as throughout sharing’s I have been open minded and willing to take on board changes. I have made sure to come prepared to these opportunities, making sure I reach deadlines allowing myself the best opportunity to receive the most feedback. Keeping up to date with blogs has enabled me to continually review and evaluate my choreographic process thinking about positives and negatives, applying any information or feedback learnt. I think my independent opinions are clear and consistent as I am open to self-reflection and evaluation. I would like to explore my own individual choreographic methods by questioning how I can take my motifs further, changing, developing, and improving them.

At this stage as my choreography solo is not complete, I haven’t fully achieved LO3 however I have gathered information from a range of sources including my research into the butterfly effect, Wayne McGregor, and Twyla Tharp. To fully reach this learning outcome my choreography will need to be complete. I will continue to research ways to develop my motifs, revisiting Wayne McGregor and clarify my stimulus and storyline. I would like to clarify my storyline from beginning to end so that my movement intentions are clear, but I would still like to leave it open to interpretation.
